Much of the confusion in the field of knowledge management stems from a failure to adequately define what knowledge is.

Most every text on knowledge management begins with an attempt to define knowledge; attempts which are usually circular and misleading. The confusion about knowledge arises because knowledge not a simple thing: it has many dimensions. And glossing over those dimensions often leads to overly simplistic and ineffective knowledge management practices.
